A lookup

A name's IPv4 addresses. For each one you also get its reverse name (PTR) and a blacklist check.

Any name, including ones with _ (_dmarc.example.com, selector._domainkey.example.com). An IP address looks up its name (PTR).

What an A record is

An A record gives a 32-bit IPv4 address for a name (RFC 1035 §3.4.1); a name may have several. For mail, the addresses of the MX hosts matter: whoever sends to the domain connects to them.
